10 Best Funk Samples

Funk is as influential of a music genre as the Blues. What I mean by this is that the Blues led the way for modern rock and country. Funk, on the other hand, led the way into modern R&B, hip hop, and electronic music. Those catchy basslines and groovy beats are what made generations dance. You can hear the roots of funk in electronic music very often. One of my personal favorite albums “Discovery” by Daft Punk shows how great funk is whether it is in the original styles from the 70’s or being reinvented in electronic music with funk samples.

What To Look For When Choosing Funk Samples

In the selections we have for the best funk sample packs, we have a nice mixture of both older styles of funk and newer electronic versions. I cannot think of funk without a grooving bass line and a drummer tight in the pocket coming to mind. That being said, there is so much more layered into funk with synths, strings, brass, woodwind, and crazy vocal layers. Funk is a common ground that you can find almost every type of instrument in.

Pricing

The price of samples is never high, especially if you have a subscription. For websites that do not have the option of purchasing through a subscription or individual samples, you will not usually be paying much out of pocket, depending on how big the pack is.

Frequency of Use

Like mentioned earlier, funk led to so many different genres and can be used in those genres very easily. New iterations of funk exist and they incorporate both new and old sounds into their music.

Skill Level

The biggest difficulty a producer will encounter is matching the timing and key of samples. Luckily most sample packs include both the key and BPM used so it takes out the guesswork.

10 Best Funk Samples

Here are our choices for the 10 Best Funk Sample Packs. We don’t have them in any specific order, it is just easier to keep them organized with numbers.

1. Funk This Up – Organic Loops

Who’s it for? Intermediate and above

This has to be the most classic funk sound on this list. Organic Loops created a pure raw funk sound with some tight snare sounds and rocking wah pedals on the guitars. The gang vocals you can find are also some of the most epitomizing tones of funk.

2. The Ultimate Funk Collection by Stephanie Deschezeaux – Bingoshakerz

In this pack, there are a lot of creative sounds from the clavinets to the percussion. There are so many different types of sounds in the grooves and loops that you can make so many different songs all with different sounds that are still considered funk.

  • Price: Available with Splice Subscription

3. Soulful Urban Funk – Apollo Sound

Who’s it for? Intermediate and above

In this pack, you can hear where funk turned into R&B. With the bass lines mixed with the synth bass, you get the sounds that characterize slower funk and most R&B.

  • Price: Available with Loopcloud Subscription
  • What is included? 526 Samples including
    • Male and Female Vocals
    • Bass
    • Scratches
    • Bells

4. Future Groove – Sample Magic

Who’s it for? Intermediate and above

This end of funk almost touches in the lofi spectrum of music. It has those calmer vibes that most funk songs would have (electronic or otherwise). I like that there are so many loops included because most funk music in the bass lines and drums are fairly repetitive so the loops save you a lot of programming time.

  • Price: Available with Splice Subscription
  • What is included? 344 Loops and 208 One Shots
    • 28 Grooves
    • Claps
    • Chops

5. Gospel Funk World 5 – Big Citi Loops

Who’s it for? Intermediate and above

Gospel and funk go hand in hand. The sounds in this pack give that perfect blend of the 2. Both are driven by the same musical styles with slightly different twists but here they are mixed to make that key changing bass-thumping piece of heaven.

  • Price: $25.11
  • What is included? 84 samples

6. Robo Disco Funk – Singomakers

Who’s it for? Intermediate and above

If there was a sample pack that epitomized the modern funk sound of today, it would be this one. I love the sounds that are in this from the popping guitar licks to the thumping kicks. This modern funk sound is perfect for many different styles of music.

8. Super Funk – Loopmasters

I love this pack because it automatically makes my mind shift to hippies. It carries those flower child vibes over into the world of funk. All of the drums (specifically the snares) are immaculate and will honestly work in jazz and other styles that use clean real drums.

The type of funk samples in here makes me think of the soundtrack to a Shaft movie (or any blaxploitation movie for that matter). The music in those was always on point and you can hear the creativity that Black Octopus put into making these samples.

Never Let the Groove Die

Funk is one of those genres that will never go out of style. You can put a song like “Play That Funky Music” and no one will be standing still, young and old. If you want to see funk at work today, one of my favorite Youtube channels is Scary Pockets. They do funk covers of songs from every genre transforming them into a whole new type of vibe. They also are on Spotify so if you got the time, take a listen.

If you like to work with samples and are wanting to learn about other genres and instruments, we have a plethora of articles that look at many different genres and styles of samples here.
