Pricing

Any live software and hardware that has to deal with vocal performance is likely going to cost a little bit more than an average stock plugin.

With that in mind, always look for sales that you can take advantage of.

Compatibility – System Requirements

If it is being used in a live environment, companies will generally try to make their product take as little processing power as possible so as to up the quality and performance speed.

Make sure you are keeping your computer up to date, that way you can be sure everything will run as smooth as possible.

DAWs that are going to be used live have a different build due to how they must react. Ableton Live is focused more so on the output and responsiveness compared to Pro Tools in a live environment.

Frequency of Use

If you are performing live regularly and want to have a tool that will hold up for you time and time again, you definitely will be getting your money’s worth. Especially if you are building your own presets to match your sound specifically.

FAQ

How do I connect my vocals to a live pitch correction?

If you are bringing it in yourself and it is not a connection with the venue’s own system, you will need a small setup. Run your mic into an interface to run your vocals through a DAW to add the pitch correction. Ableton Live would be one of the best for this because it is very big on reducing latency.

Can I run a pitch correction plugin on the sound board?

The short answer is yes you can. It can be a little more difficult getting a board that has the connections for Waves plugins. One of the “easiest” ways of using auto-tune at the board is by using Dante to digitally patch the signal to run through a computer with the plugins for processing, then back to the board itself.

Time for a Tune-up

The biggest struggle of doing any live performance and relying on a plugin, is the hardware. Your computer is going to take a beating and because of that, may need regular maintenance. With that in mind, you will need to regularly backup your computer, preferably to an external drive that you can load onto a different computer if the need arises. Investing in yourself and your art will never let you down.
