7 Best Reverb Plugins

A great reverb is something to be treasured. So many people have different ways of getting their perfect tone such as room mics, recording is special reverb chambers, but the simplest way is with plugins. Now there are different reverbs for achieving different sounds. I love using hall reverbs on vocals, but a plate reverb sounds really good too.

There are a couple different methods on using reverb on vocals, drums, or even guitars. One way to make guitars sound great is to record them in stereo, send the signal to a stereo reverb bus, then swap the panning of the reverb bus. Then all of the left guitar channel reverberates in the right and all of the right guitar channel reverberates in the left. A method I love to use on vocals is running 2 reverbs, one super short and crisp and the other as more of a background wash with a long decay. That being said, there are so many different ways to implement a great reverb sound.

What To Look For When Choosing a Reverb Plugin

Reverbs are one of the most enjoyable plugins and effects that you can use. It can be difficult at times not to buy every one that is out there because they have a special aspect to them. Most of the time, you need to narrow down the selection to what you specifically need. To help you figure out the best option, here are some guidelines we like to take into consideration.

Pricing

A top of the line reverb plugin is going to run you a decent amount of money especially at full price. That being said, look for monthly payment options or even sales to help with that cost.

Compatibility – System Requirements

Reberbs can take so much cpu power it’s not even funny. You will not only want to make sure your computer is up to date for the requirements but also has enough power. I’[ve had so many issues with sessions because I wanted to use a reverb that took more processing than any other plugin in my session.

DAW Compatibility

The compatibility with your DAW is key when it comes to successfully using your plugins. However, reverbs are one of the [;ugin types that are generally accepted across the board for DAWs.

Frequency of Use

A reverb is going to be one of the most used effects you will own. Sometimes you will use multiple different reverbs in the same session for different instruments. .

Skill Level

Reverbs can be a bit tricky to handle and fine tune. You want to make sure the decay time fits perfectly as well as the overall mix with whatever instrument or vocal you have it on. Don’t be discouraged if you don’t have the reverb sounding tight on your first attempts, it can take a while to master.

This list should give you what you need to determine which reverb you should invest in next.

Phoenixverb by Exponential Audio – iZotope

Phoenixverb by Exponential Audio
Phoenixverb by Exponential Audio – iZotope

I love the detail you can put into the Phoenixverb with both the attack and decay. There is a more expensive version called the Phoenixverb Surround, which offers the capabilities to mix in 7:1. You wouldn’t normally need a setup such as this outside of working on a movie or possibly a live concert mix.

TrueVerb – Waves

This is a reverb that I use regularly. You’ll find this on most reverb busses for both drums and my vocals. With the 2 reverb method I mentioned earlier, I generally use this as the short initial reverb that goes on the lead vocals. It has this crisp and clear sound that just sits perfectly for reverb on high frequencies.

Valhalla Vintage Verb – Valhalla

Valhalla Vintage Verb
Valhalla Vintage Verb – Valhalla

Since it came on the scene, I have not heard people stop talking about Valhalla’s Verb. Their whole idea was to capture the reverb that has been used on classic electronic music tracks and import them into the modern era. That isn’t to say, however, that it cannot be used effectively on real instruments.

Sound Toys’ whole goal was to make a simple reverb, and honestly when your reverb sounds this good, why complicate it? It is geared solely as a plate reverb with a low cut to help prevent the build up of muddy frequencies.

Intentional Effects

Reverbs are the sticky glue that somehow makes tracks sound just right for atmosphere and presence. In live shows, it can add a whole new level to a mix and make a tiny room feel huge. The ways to enhance a listener’s experience are endless and it is up to you as the engineer to make sure they get as much out of the track as they can. There aren’t many people who actively comment about the reverb of a song and it may go unnoticed, but just remember that people would notice if it wasn’t there.
