Metal Guitars at a Glance:

Metal Instruments and Why They’re Unique

Metal is full of attitude and anger. It was always a great way to blow off steam and give your feelings an avenue to be expressed. They give this attitude through their booming low end that comes usually with humbuckers. Some guitarists can use single coils well but it has become standard to be using humbuckers. As Metal progressed they started using active pickups for the guitars to become even more sensitive to the sounds they make. The three main characteristics that really pinpoint a metal guitar are:

  • Active Pickups
  • Humbuckers
  • Unique Shapes and Stylings

Best Metal Guitars

Price (before shipping)- $299.99- $3,199.99

Best For: Metalcore

Manufacturer: Hoshino Gakka

Why We Like It:

Ibanez is a brand that can vary from being a beginner guitar to being one of the best in the industry. I have heard these guitars played in a wide variety of ways but none comes close to the amazing tones they get for Metal. Many big bands such as August Burns Red and Knocked Loose use these guitars. Even Steve Vai, who is one of the greatest guitarists alive, uses

Ibanez.

Things to consider: This guitar is relatively basic when it comes to the hardware and has room to be improved by the player.

2. Schecter Reaper Series

Price (before shipping)- $699- $1,119

Best For: Hardcore

Manufacturer: Schecter

Why We Like It:

Schecter has a personal place in my own heart, I have been in love with their guitars ever since I first listened to Avenged Sevenfold. Synyster Gates, Johnny Christ, and Zakky Vengeance all have their own deals for personalized guitars with Schecter opening a whole new world of guitars to me. The Reaper series is built for technical playing as well as heavy riffing coming in both 6 and 7 string options. Schecter always delivers the goods no matter the genre.

Things to consider: I’ve got nothing that needs to be considered. This guitar is a fantastic piece of work.

3. John Petrucci Majesty

John Petrucci Majesty

Best For: Prog Metal

Manufacturer: Ernie Ball

Why We Like It:

John Petrucci is a beast of the game and without a doubt, is one of the most technical players around today. With that in mind, you have to know that he has worked hard to create one of the best guitars for him and others. His guitars do feature a through neck design, meaning that the neck is not bolted on but built in as part of the body which makes replacement almost impossible but it has an amazing sound. Every through neck guitar I have played and heard is so smooth that it almost makes me want to throw out my other guitars.

Things to consider: The only drawback to this is that it is so perfect you will not ever want to change a thing.

4. Strandberg Boden Metal

Price (before shipping)- $1,695- 42,495

Strandberg Boden Metal- Sarah Longfield Edition

Best For: Technical Fingering

Manufacturer: Strandberg

Why We Like It:

Things to consider: It standardly comes with a soft case; you may want to invest into a good hard case for it.

The way I heard of Strandberg was through the Youtube musician Sarah Longfield who has to be one of the most talented musicians on Youtube. She plays amazing melodic lines building straight into chest smashing riffs. All of it done on this guitar here. Strandberg is perfect for the minimal guitarist looking to reduce their size overall while still maintaining a great tone. They have options for 6, 7, and 8 strings.

5. ESP LTD 1000 Series

Price (before shipping)- $899- $1,099

Best For: Thrash Metal

Manufacturer: ESP

Why We Like It:

ESP is a company that has had its ups and downs. I think the biggest down was probably the lawsuit that Gibson filed against them, but they have come back stronger and better than ever. ESP has made a name for itself in metal by being the go to guitars of Metallica, Slayer, and Anthrax. That’s 3 of the big 4. These guitars pack a raw punch that grabs your guts and rips them out through your throat.

Things to consider: This guitar is built specifically for metal. Unlike other guitars on this list, the ESP LTD is not great used for other genres.

6. Jackson Pro HT7

Price (before shipping)- $1,183.66

Best For: Djent

Manufacturer: Fender

Why We Like It:

This guitar is the one made specifically for one of the guitarists of Periphery, an amazing band with crazy albums from start to finish. Misha outfitted this guitar with jumbo frets giving you more room for accuracy as well as bending right into that sweet spot for a squeal.

Things to consider: The pots for the tone and volume are a little tight out of the box. It will need some breaking in unless that will work for what you are using it for.

If there is one genre outside of Jazz that has more sub genres and styles, it is most definitely metal. There is so much history, not just to the music, but within the guitars themselves, Metal has brought the innovation of the guitar from the normal 6 strings and increased it so as to get a lower tone overall. It also has brought about the change of using active pickups which are almost a guitar pickup version of a condenser microphone. Active pickups have a battery (generally a 9 volt) that power them and create a more sensitive response that sounds so crisp and clean. Before the distortion that is.

Metal has built a name for itself having. Specific look of guitar as well as sound. From that has sprung certain genres that excel in creating those guitars, companies such as Ibanez, Schecter, ESP LTD, Strandberg and many more. These companies in particular love working with artists to create a more suitable instrument for their particular style.
