How to Build a Podcasting Setup: Part 2- Microphones

Welcome to Part 2 of our series on How to Build a Podcasting Setup where we are showing you what key components you need for producing your content. In the previous article I showed what DAWs are great for beginners and veterans alike as well as some sturdy stands that will keep all of the wobble noise away.

In this installment I am showing what microphones are the best choices overall. Of all pieces of equipment to save money for, I would say the microphone is the one to invest in the most. The initial capture of the voice and sound is crucial.

One big factor in the selection of your microphone is what the environment you are in is like. In an ideal world, we would all be recording in completely isolated rooms with no interference from outside the room we were in. However, that is never the case. It is not rare for background noise and unwanted sounds to be heard in any recording or podcast. Some podcasters even will incorporate it into their shows. But one way to help cut down on the atmospheric noise is to use less sensitive dynamic microphones rather than detailed condensers. However, on the reverse side of that logic, if you are in a silent environment or at least slightly isolated, you can use a condenser without worry and it will sound great.

The Shure SM7B has become one of the top industry microphones for talk shows on both radio and podcasts. The responsiveness of this microphone almost matches that of a condenser. It comes with 2 levels of pop filter, one that is light and standard, and one that is a lot heavier which you should not need inside at all. It is the perfect tool for all of your podcasting needs.

Electrovoice RE-20

Ever since its creation in 1968, the RE20 has been a popular choice for instruments as well as voices. They have been used for communication in studio environments, recording, talk shows, anything involving communications. This will be perfect for anyone’s setup. One key thing to remember is to just take care of the mic clip that comes with this. Do not over tighten or just pull the microphone out, since it is possible that it could break, and you do not want to have to pay to replace it.

Shure SM58

Price (before shipping)- $99.00

Both of the microphones I listed previously were pretty pricey. So for a dynamic microphone that sounds great without breaking the bank, I thought I would throw this classic in the mix. This microphone has lasted the test of time as one of the greatest voice microphones in the business. It will be great for any vocal recordings for a podcast while still staying within your budget.

Best Condenser Microphones

This microphone is a small condenser microphone that packs a lot of punch for its size. I have used this for speaking projects as well as vocal recordings. In both scenarios I have been pleased and gotten everything I could need from it. I would definitely suggest this microphone to anyone looking for a clean vocal sound.

Audio Technica AT2020

Audio Technica- AT202

This is yet another microphone I have used on speaking projects. My university had these microphones available in a computer lab that we would do our projects in. And with that, we spent many hours making voices through these having a great time. All of this to say, this microphone can help create some amazing sounds for both you and your listeners.

Blue Yeti

Price (before shipping)- $128.98

This is probably the simplest microphone that any podcaster could need. All of the controls are built right in and it is able to record directly to the computer without the use of an interface. It has an extremely responsive sound that will pick up anything and everything that you could have to say.
